I set up a personal laptop on my companies network. My company uses Lotus Notes/Domino Server for internal mail but allows us to pass though our proxy server so we can check our personal email outside the company using outlook.

As a test, I sent an email from outlook to my company email address and got the error below (I exxed out some stuff).

Now I get that stupid error every time I try to email anyone at my company, even from home or on my wife's company network. Most other addresses work fine but I have got that same error, worded exactly the same, even for email addresses on other servers.

The error appears to be generated locally. I have had our email admin sit on the server and whatch as I tried to hit it from outside and she saw nothing from my machine. Its almost as if Outlook somehow remembers that I am not allowed to do this and just automatically pops up the error for my companies server.

Any of you email gurus got a suggestion?

OOps...forgot message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'XXXXX@XXXXXX.com'. Subject 'TEST FROM SE016', Account: 'mail.alltel.net', Server: 'mail.alltel.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relaying mail to XXXXXXX.com is not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

The outgoing smtp server is not accepting mail for that email address. The error message is from the server, telling the client that you are not allowed to relay.

If you are outside the company network then you will not be able to relay mail through thier SMTP server. You must use your ISP's SMTP server. on your wifes company network you would use thier SMTP server for outgoing mail, not your companies.

Thanks, I actually started figuring this out on my own. Its surprising that the network admins on both networks where I have tried this didn't have a clue.

Before I ask my wife's ISP a stupid question...can she simply set her smtp server in outlook to the ISP she is hooked up to at the moment or is it more complicated than that? I have a feeling this question will go right over their heads...You should see the response I got from my ISP....^&%^*%

If your wife is on her company network then she can just use her companies mail server for outgoing mail. If connected to your ISP from home then use thier SMTP server.

You should be able to look at your ISP's web site and get the SMTP server address. Otherwise, just give them a call and I'm sure that they will be happy to help.
