Last week my motherboard died and I had to get a new one with a CPU and RAM. I had some problems and thought I would pass along some things I learned.
When I got everything hooked up Windows would not boot. The famous Blue Screen. Which I expected because it would try to load the chipset drivers for my old VIA chipset and my new one has the NFORCE2 chipset.
So... I booted off my "slipstreamed" XP SP1 CD and did an "inplace upgrade" I think they call it. When it boots it asks if you want to use the recovery console "press R", I chose the other choice to install Windows XP. Then it scans your Hard drive for a previous install of XP, which it found, then asks if you want to repair this installation. That is when I hit the "R" key. It then runs the install using your current setup.
So far so good, but I ran into a problem. When it got to the part where it was "scanning for devices" it would always reboot at 34 minutes remaining. I tried it 3 or 4 times. Then I had an idea. My thought was I was trying to make it do too much at once. What I did was shut it down and remove all cards except for the graphics and reran the setup. After that it finished.
I then updated the NFORCE2 chipset drivers, and shut it down again. I then added one card at a time, loaded the drivers which I had previously gathered, then shut it down and added another.
Worked like a charm! Of course I had a ton of Windows Updates, and all the services I had disabled before reset themselves. Like the messenger service, workstation, and others. I also had to reinstall Diskkeeper Workstation, the defrag program. But, Norton Antivirus, and Zonealarm worked fine.
I hope this helps to prevent others from having to many problems if they need to reinstall XP like I did.
