reInstalling xp over itself 1

i want to reinstall XP over itself .. but .. i don;t want to lose the programs list on my Start menu .. i thought of copying the folder (start menu).. but not all the programs are listed there !! it has some anly .. where i can find the rest so i can make a copy ??

What you are looking for is called an "in-place upgrade", this will allow you to reinstall the Windows XP core files, while keeping your files and settings intact.

While I have never had a problem with this procedure loosing any files you should ensure that you have a backup of any important data.

i don't mean losing files .. what i meant was losing the list of programs .. i know that the programs will be there .. but the shortcut links on the start menu won't be there anymore .. i have to add them one by one to the start menu ..

Your Start, Programs List, should be untouched.

Nope - As gpalmer711 says - an in-place upgrade is the way to go. I did one yesterday and didn't lose anything. All profiles were intact. Only one application had to be re-installed and that was for a smart card reader for card authentication logon so it has to dovetail deeply into MS-GINA.

if you're just trying to make sure your system files are not corrupted or problimatic do a sfc

Insert ORIGINAL cd in drive

start > run > cmd

type sfc /purgecache

when it's done type sfc /scannow
