Hello again,
Thanks for your responses to my rebooting posting. It seems that there are issues (error -610) that now require me to reinstall NDS. Can anyone point me to a white paper on how to do this? I am not having much success in finding what I need in either my Netware 6 Administrators Handbook or on the web.
Thanks,

Chris, with as little info as you provided and not knowing the complete scenario, it's hard to give good recommendations.

But in general, it's usually not necessary to reinstall NDS. You can usually resolve errors without doing that. It's also possible that reinstalling NDS won't resolve your problem, but that really depends on what is causing it in the first place.

If you could give more details, we might be able to help you work through the problems. IF you do get to the point of feeling like you need to reinstall, I would recommend calling Novell or someone qualified to help you do so correctly. It's possible that you could cause even greater damage than what you already have.

Sorry for the lack of adequate info. This all started with a plant-wide power outage. After power was restored, this server would not boot properly and I created a post on this discussion board and received some pretty good suggestions on what to rem out in AUTOEXEC.NCF to get the server to boot.
After I finally got the server to boot, I found that I can no longer connect to this server through either the network or through a laptop using a cross over cable. I ran DSREPAIR advanced mode and got a message stating "Could not open locat database - error-610" message. The little bit of info that I found on Novell's site concerning error -610 said to reinstall NDS, however the info was vague and did not give details on how to reinstall it.
Fortunately, this is my backup server and I can afford to gamble a little on the method I use to repair it, so if you have any suggestions to share with or without reinstalling NDS, I would be happy to try them. Worst case scenario, I can always reinstall from scratch.
Thanks,

So you have another server in the same tree with a full replica of all partitions? If that's the case, removing and reinstalling might be the easiest way.. But here are thoughts on how to fix the current problem.

If DS isn't opening correctly, you should see an error reflecting this when the server boots. It's usually shortly after the LAN drivers load. Try to get that error message and do some research on it. You may need to bring the server up in stages to catch it. Look for a TID on the LOADSTAGE process and starting the server up in phases.

Another thing you could try.. Startup you server with this:

SERVER -NDB

Then do a DSREPAIR -A, Advanced, full repair, default options. and see if that allows the repair to run. If so, try to login afterwards. This switch on startup causes the NDS database to be locked so it doesn't try to open it. Then the repair is sometimes able to fix it. .
