is it possible to reinstall windows through dos without losing any of the information on your harddrive. if so could you please tell me. thanks

you don't need to reinstall through dos. insert the xp cd and boot up into the main setup screen. press enter to install windows xp. it will detect a current version already installed. press r (i think) to do a repair installation. then let it go like normal, and after a few minutes you should be up and running.

windows xp repair installations work wonders. it is much better than any past version of windows'. you won't lose any data, but you may have to reinstall or re-register some of your applications because many dll's and registry keys are overwritten. mike griffith

Try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
