I have a failed exchange 2003 server by way of a crashed HD. I installed MS Windows server 2003 on a new hard drive. I tried to restore by way of MS backup, but unfortunately one of the back up tapes of the full backup set is missing. I refered to the thread955-1376239 thread, and it seems prety much straight forward, except that I have NO backup at all. Is there anything different I can do other thatn what's on the thread? Thank you. Click.

P.S. most everyone on our network has copies of ALL their mail on a pst file that I made a few days before the crash when Exchange was acting up. In fact, I changed their Outlook to receive the mail on their PST since they can't connect to the Exchange server, and most of them get their mail through POP servers outside our network. Thank you for your help. Click.

Assuming that this was not the only server and Active Directory is intact...
Make sure the user mailboxes are configured on the Exchange server.
Then you'll have to go to each user and connect to the Exchange server.
From here there are 2 options:
1. If you don't have to recreate an Outlook profile, all you have to do is take them off the pst, Outlook will synchronize with the server and 'push' everything onto the server.
2. If you have to recreate the Outlook profiles, then do that and just import the pst files.

Note: this must be done for each user and can be very time consuming and suck some bandwidth.

I'm Stuck now. I installed a new W2003 server, Called it the same as the exchange server before it died. Installed Exchange server 2003 through all the steps with exchange server deployment tools, I followed ALL the steps for a fresh installation(including forestprep, domainprep). I did not have any errors.

At the last step, I ran setup and it seemed to me that the size of the installation files was very small (20mb)

I then ran the exch 2003 service pack 2

When I restarted and I went to the system manager, I could see our server, and when I click on First Storage Group, it gives me the error:

"The action could not be completed becuase the MS Exchange Information Store service is unavailable. Be sure the service is running and you have connectivity to the MS Exchange Server computer"

Operation: Retrieving mount information
ID no: c1041721
Exchange System Manager.

I searched for this, and the solution was that I turn on the Exchange Information Store service, but when I tried to do that, the ONLY exchange service that is visible in the services list is:
Microsoft Exchange Management. If someone knows why all the other services for Exchange are not there, it would be helpful.

Also: On the active Directory, I can see all the users, and their exchange tabs on their properties, however, most of the items are greyed out and when I try to click on one of them it gives me a simmilar error as before. Thank you. Click.

I think you only loaded the management tools. It's good that you still see the ad object for the defunct server. Try again. This time install with the /disasterrecovery switch.
