Registry Cleaners?

I have two W2k computers (both clean installs) on my lan which have, for the most part, given solid service for 2, or is it 3 already, years without a reinstall. Both have considerable proggies installed. I suspect that they are both well past some tlc.

Which registry cleaner do you recommend for an intermediate computer user and why? I am more inclined to safety and less toward maximizing the benefits. TIA.

I can only say Norton 2002 by experience, its windoctor is extremly good. When it scans the registry it tells you its recommended fixes, it give definitions for each clean and tells you why it needs to be done; good for both intermediate as well as advanced users because of its detailed explanations as well as easily to follow instructions.

I run (in this order):

1. Toniarts Easy Cleaner

2. Micro$oft's RegClean

3. JV-16 Power Tools Reg Cleaner

4. RegSeeker

5. OleClean.

I let the delete everything they find.

So far the only thing they delete unwantedly is PC-Forrest's Startman, which I simply "repair" after a reg cleaning.

I follow all this with a registry defrag using Ontrack "Fix-It Utilities 4.0" and reboot.

And as IVBN says above....Windoctor does a great job but when I am done Windoctor always finds nothing left.

No 3 on TonyBose's list would get my vote (nice interface & undo facility) - although quite honestly I see no difference 'before' and 'after' on 2k (have one machine, running two and a half years, lots of apps installed, in daily use, still running as well as when installed - as far as I can tell - never been 'cleaned', defragged etc).

I wouldn't use M$'s Regclean - its too old (97 i think) - not designed for 2k.

I run them all because what one doesn't find...the next one does. My machine (until sp4 as you know) has always run clean enough to eat out of. BTW Wolluf, did you see my other reply about the sp4 snafu?

I have tried a few, and use a combination of RegClean and Registry Mechanic.

Microsoft RegClean is free and is very unintrusive. It doesn't scan too deep, but it does a fairly good job. It has never caused me any problems to the registry.

Registry Mechanic is not free, but is pretty good. Used with RegClean, it cleans out most things from my registry and tidies it up well.
