Registry cleaner/washer for ME

I have a friend with a laptop (Compaq Presario). Some one loaded and unloaded all kinds of stuff on it. I have been asked to clean it up. I used "add/remove" whenever I could but also had to dump a bunch of stuff running in background where I could not locate how it was loading.

Question: Is there a program, or freeware out there that I can download and run. I'm looking for something that will inventory the registry and wash out all dead links and invalid references?

I have already searched the registry and edited out as much as I could find but I know there is more in there. Thanks for any responses you can offer.
