I had a problem a while back with the registry and pagefile booting, and now I have one again. I installed something (that wasn't windows xp compatible), and when I restarted it took a long time for the registry and pagefile to boot. I tried restoring the system, which had no effect. I then tried doing the registry lastgoodknown restoration, which messed up the screen etc., so then to fix this I restored my system, which fixed the registry, but the booting problem was still there.
So I have two questions: How can I trace what is confusing the computer during the registry and pagefile boot, and what does system restore acctually do?

If all the stuff I have done so far sounds pretty reckless, thats because it is, but I think I have the system back to the state it should be, apart from the above problem.

Make notes on what u install.. and date it.. simple but effective to know what messed up your XP.
Items left in the Registery make boot time rather slow if its not there..

1. You might try a program call RegClean95 (FREE from MS) I still use it today on XP and Net 2003. works rather good.
2. you might also try several versions of 3rd party Registery cleaners. they work also. 3. manually check your boot.ini and windows.ini an see if the strange program is still listed there...
4. then I'd check the system info for any hardware conflicts. >>start>programs>accessories>system tools> systeminfo> hardware conflicts
5. I save the HD space and disable RESTORE. when i have problems i insert the bootable CD and upgrade back to or REPAIR the current version. Saves time money and get the job done FAST...(make a pot of coffee/tea while u are upgrading) calms the nerves and makes thing go faster an better..

I am pretty sure it's not a hardware conflict, it was before, but this time its just software. Does anyone know again what restore acctually does?

Summary: This article discusses the System Restore feature of Microsoft Windows XP, which enables users, in the event of a problem, to restore their PCs to a previous state without losing personal data files.

I sorted the problem (well microsoft did) when windows update automatically installed patch KB824146, and now the first problem with usb's and the second problem which I don't know the cause of. I don't know what it has done, but it sure has fixed it!
Thanks for all above comments.
