I have a computer that was Registred to Mariam and her name is Marian. She wants it changed. The user account name is changed and I already went to the registry (HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version) and changed the registred owner name. The problem is that under documents and settings The name Mariam still appears. I click on desktop under Mariam and all the icons under user account Marian show in there. I tried to change the user account to another name to see if that folder would change but only the name on welcome screen and start show up.

You could make several registry edits, but I would not. Rather:

. logon as Administrator and rename the existing Marian to something else;

. Create a new user Marian;

. Logon as Marian and logout;

. Logon as Administrator and copy the original (Mariam) profile to the newly created Marian profile:
. Logon as Marian and test; when happy...

. Logon as Administrator and delete the (renamed) original user.

Thanks for the reply. Worked like a charm

Tonycard,

I have played around with alternative solutions, but the quickest way to resolve the issue is as stated in my post below.

The odd step missed in the past is the necessity to have in step #3 a logon as the new user. This is critical as XP then creates the structure for the new user profile.

XP has a discordance between the user name and the named profile store. This is essentially a security concern. Albeit I would admit to All that it is kind of a pain in the buttocks.

Welcome to Tek-Tips.

Best wishes,

Well actually what I did was I did as you link suggested and then I created a third user and then I proceeded with the copy and paste and was getting some error towards the end of the process but then I went to documents and settings and was able to change the Name Mariam to Marian and then that worked fine. So all is good.

tonycard,

Sounds good. Thank you for the follow-up.
