Just a quick query.

I have a programme that will only work if you put in the CD everytime.
If I copy the CD contents to the Hard Drive, what is the path that I will need to change in regedit, so it looks the hard drive location rather than the CD location?

All it is, is a game, that has been loaded to
= programme files.

Any answers would be appreciated!!

Kind regards

Hayley!

Normally programs (games) that require the CD to be available locally is to prevent illegal software use. Why can't you just put the CD in when you want to play the game?

Thanks lander215 for that informative response.

Sheesh.

There is a program called "Virtual CD" that does what you want but it's not free. Do a search on Google for it.

You can use the subst command from a command prompt to map a local folder to a drive letter (eg, subst g: C:\winnt\temp - see subst /? for params). This fools most apps wanting CDs, but some still know its not a CD.

As a general rule, you are not going to be able to just copy the files to disk, as any copy protections looks for cleverly hidden errors on the cd (which wont be copied across).
The virtual cd approach may work (and there is a free version - google for daemon tools), but will mean you have to create an iso image of the cd.
At the end of the day - it's probably easier to just stick the disk in...

Thanks for your response'.

If I uninstall the programme, and then copy the cd to my hard disk, and run the setup from there do you think that it will remember the setup location to be my hard disk!

I work away from home alot and have installed it on my home PC, but also want it on my laptop for when I'm away from home! I don't want to have to buy the game again!

Thanks for your help!

Hayley,

Why not just try it? (if no good, try again with subst?)

My apologies, I thought this site and it's users frowned upon helping others break the laws.

Apparently I was mistaken, there are some that don't care.

I agree with lander, but why assume he is doing something illegal? Seems like something I would like to do as well, and do. I pay for all my games, but it is a pain in the ass to find the cd everytime, wait for it to spin up, and if you play alot, games generate a lot of wear and tear on your drive.

To quote Queen Amidala... "You assume to much"

In answer to Hayley's question I would suggest going a search on google for a "no cd" patch for your game. I've done this for pretty much all of mine. Of course when you install you game, you want to choose full installation if it is a choice. This would be installing it from the CD, not from a directory. The patches then usually replace the exe file with one that does not look for the disc.

Good luck!

Get a life. If they want to come knocking on my door for a $50 game I bought and own, let them.

For me nothing slides in the work place, but at home...c'mon. I think you're being a little anal here....

(OK, now attack) hehe....whatever....

Netwalker1,

You are right. Such discussions should be saved for a warez forum... I am not trying to promote this kind of discussion and apologize. I'm no angel. I try to do the right thing 99.99% of the time...but slip a little here and there....
