Hi all,

I have Win 98 on my home PC with IE6 and Norton Internet Security.
Recently some spyware got onto my PC, changed my home page and disabled my access to the part of IE's Tools->Options which allows the home page to be changed. I tried to fix this through RegEdit, but got a message "Registry Editing has been disabled by your Administrator".
I have installed Spy Sweeper, Spyware Blaster, and Spy Ferret. With these I have cleared all Spyware and Adware, I have regained access to change my home page, but still can not get at RegEdit.
There should be no Admin account on my PC - if any it should be my own logon.

Can anyone suggest how I can get back in control of my PC.

Aidan Hughes.

Recommend that you also d/l and run Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder, and also update and run your AV program to make sure your system is malware and virus free.

If they do not find anything additional and the problem happened within the last 5 days, then hold down the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command prompt only' and press Enter, at the C:\> prompt type scanreg /restore and press Enter, select a Registry that predates the problem, and press Enter.

An outside chance; try making a copy of Regedit, on your desktop, perhaps, rename it then try running it.

Andy.

if you on a network though, your net admin could lock you out of regedit. do you have a domain admin?

Hello hughesai,

If that is not a deliberate "general" RestrictRun on you and that the regedit.exe copy is still on your box, then make the following plain-text file and name it with whatever having extension .reg. Afterward, double-click on it to import.
Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableRegistryTools"=-
(Exact copy, including blank line at the end)

regards - tsuji

Thanks all for your help.

tsuji - I used your reg update and it worked - I can now get back into RegEdit.

I am not on a network (other than connected to an ISP !), and it was not a general lock out by any domain admin etc. - this is my own home standalone PC.

Ski - I have already used CWShredder (and also Hijack This), but will take your advice to also get Ad-aware and Spybot. I had the problem for a couple of weeks, so I have not tried your other suggestion.

Thanks once again

Aidan.

for future ref. in this situation:
You can also try running HijackThis and looking for an O7 line that ends in DisableRegedit=1. If you find it, allow hijackthis to fix it.

Thanks diogenes10.

Unfortunately I did try this but "Hijack This" did not pick up the problem - hence this post !

Aidan.

I have the same problem, but with windows XP, I tried tsuji's solution, still says regedit disabled by admin,
is there other way to enable regedit. I am admin, so it has nothing to do with user right. It's just the regedit has been hijacked.

bcastner just posted link to a tool to help remove some restrictions.
the third tab 17-24 has a box for registry editor so there's a chance it might help you.
