Refreshing icons on desktop

At boot time, I've got a lot of programs that get loaded. It seems that they prevent the desktop icon images from being displayed (about half appear correctly and the others don't have their images displayed).

If I refresh the desktop after all my programs have loaded then all the icons appear.

Is there any way to force such a refresh or do I have to do this "manually"?

I don't know if this can help you, but I had almost the same situation with you. The differents is I don't have to refresh the desktop. All icons appear after all the programs loaded.

What I did is look into the defragment utility and analyze the system disk/partition. I saw that the file ShellIconCache (no extension) is fragmented, almost 30 fragments. Then I used TweakUI from MS and do the Repair->Rebuild Icons. I did this several times until the ShellIconCache file doesn't appear in the defragment analyzer. Now all my icons appear very fast.

And one more thing is you may also want to defrag your system partition if it is heavily fragmented.

A much quicker way is to simply DELETE the ShellIconCache file.
It gets rebuild on reboot.
Performance wise, keep the number of icons on the desktop to a minimum. What you can do is make a few folders on your desktop, say Tools - Apps - Games , .. and move all related shortcuts in the respective folder.
Result: faster loads, less memory use.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, excpect random guesses or no replies at all. Please specify details.
