Can anyone provide references to books, articles, etc. that describe MS Word from the inside out? I mean, refrences that a programmer might want to use, not a "Dummies" book. I would like to know how the darn thing REALLY works. Also, I would like a good reference to Macros and macro creation.

Thanks.

1. Word 2000 Developer's Handbook by Guy Hart-Davis (from Sybex). While it is for Word 2000, 95% of it still applies for 2002, and 2003. It is 1200+ pages, and covers a LOT. You want a good look inside Word and VBA? This will help. There may be a newer version out, but you may be able to find this one in a half price computer book store. Worth it. A+

2. VBA Developer's Handbook by Ken Getz and Mike Gilbert (also from Sybex). Covers up to version 2002. Excellent. Again, probably available in half price computer book places, as it is a little old. However, it has a huge amount of information, including using Windows API within your VBA code.

Last point. No book covers it all. It takes time, and serious experience.

There's a text by Guy Hart-Davis if you can find it:
Word 97 Macro & VBA Handbook. The Ref to VBA Developer's Handbook is aimed at programming VBA to the max whereas I think the one I mentioned covers Word well.

A good way to learn about VBA for Word is to RECORD macros and then fiddle with the results.

Recording macros is a great thing to do, to learn VBA. However, it is not the same as really understanding Word. For example, even if you strictly used Styles, applied using VBA, would you know why files that use Styles, are 40% smaller than files not using Styles? I mean, understanding Word as bloatware?
