Let me preface this thread by saying I know I am not a Cisco Wizard and before any purchasing begins I will have a wizbang CCIE involved in the project, but for now I need some basic info so I can put together some budgetary numbers for managment.

I am considering adding a second connection to the internet via Tachyon Satalite Broadband via BGP for failover purposes only. I am getting conflicting information regaurding how large my address space needs to be in order to do BGP. My question is, is it just an ISP policy thing or are there actual technical reason why SOME ISPs won't do it? I have a /26 range of IPs.

Second question, has anyone used Tachyon for this purpose and have comments on how they were to deal with.

You'll need at least a /24. A /26 won't be carried by most all ISPs, because they want to keep their routing tables small. If every ISP carried small netblocks like a /26 or smaller, their routing tables would be huge. By carring a /24 or larger, then can still ensure connectivity since your /26 is probably part of someone else's /19 or /18.

I wouldn't use a satelite for a backup connection though. Your pings times will be at least 250ms, and proabably be unreliable. If you want a cheap one, look into wireless microwave isps.

A /26 is too small to route via BGP on the Internet. Your only option would be to get a 2nd link to your existing ISP but maybe to another one of their POPs if you're worried about their existing POP going down. You can also use ISDN backup to that ISP and that would be just as fast as the original link although very expensive during downtimes.
