reduction in sound volume

Hi I am having problems with the loss of sound. If I turn my speakers way up I can hear something. However this is not what I used to have. I havent installed or removed anything from my windows ME to cause this as far as I can tell. I could play CD.s ok last week but Friday the sound disappeared unless the volume was right up, but it is still quiet.
Any ideas.

Shirley - TWO simple things to check:

1) Make sure that the speaker jack is pushed into the sound card (device) in the back of the computer - ALL the way.

2) On your desktop in Windows, double click the SPEAKER down in the R corner, in the SYSTRAY.........
Has the sound been turned all the way down ? Is it set to mute ?
> IN control panel........ go to MULTIMEDIA and check the settings.

>> Next step> DEVICE MANAGER ........ SOUND DEVICE...... does Windows say that the sound device is FULLY Functional ?

Maybe a very simple problem :

The dry cell in your speaker is dead!!!!!!

I checked the leads, they seem OK.

All speaker setting s using icon are on full and in multi media too.
I havent any dry cells in my speakers they are plugged into mains.
I will check the device manager.

I feel so silly. I moved my cse the other day and the leads became unplugged. I plugged the spekr back into the wrong line out jack.
Whoops.
