Reduce the size of the GP database

I'm using GP 8.0 and have gotten a message that "this company's database size is 1.90 GB. The limit is 2 GB. Remove history from your company, ... etc." I tried using the SHRINKDATABASE function to reduce the size of the DB and eliminate the message but it didn't work. What else can be done?

Looks like you are using MSDE, which has a limit of 2GB per database.

There are a number of options I can think of:

1. Delete some historical data. (Look at the manuals for individual modules for step by step instructions.) First place I would look is to see if you are storing activity tracking information - that can grow very large over time and most companies do not really need it past about a year or 2 back. It can also be exported and stored elsewhere.

2. Upgrade to SQL 2005 Express - that goes up to 4GB per database (I believe there is a minimum SP level that made GP 8.0 compatible with SQL 2000, I think SP 4 or 5).

3. Upgrade to full version of SQL, that will take away the 2GB limit.

4. Look at a product like Company Data Archive from Professional Advantage, it will 'move' your historical data to a new company database which will free up the space needed (the limit is per database).

I took the 'Upgrade to SQL 2005 Express' route about three weeks ago and had my performance ever suffered!

A heads up to anyone thinking about it, Express has no Maintennace Plans!

Like a dork, I installed the original SQL 2005 Express package and am hoping that when I run the Express SP2 on it this weekend it'll help some. I had to do a side-by-side upgrade as my installation path was to long?

Everything I've read states that I shouldn't see a performance difference between the two sql flavors but I do as of right now. I don't know if it's the database engine or the something I need to do in Great Plains yet, but my users are absolutely incensed.
