how can I change the default size of a worksheet. I want to completey delete unused columns...what are there? 256? I would like to reduce that size.. is this possible?

you cannot delete columns but you CAN hide them

To do this by default, you would need to set up how you want the spreadsheet to look and then save it as a template file (.XLT) in the templates folder of excel

Your question about default size can be viewed in two ways.

1) From the perspective of file size, only the cells which have data or any formatting are written to disk. If you scroll to the lower right corner of your worksheet (an engineer might say the SouthEast corner), then hold shift key and press End Home keys, you will highlight any rows and columns that XL has data or formatting in them that you do not need.

2) From the perspective of screen size, you can simply hide the columns or rows. Hold shift key and press End + RightArrow key and then click Format Columns Hide.
