Reduce Characters in Columns

I have a database that I'm trying to force into another program. The problem I have is that the way the data is now is set to a charachter max of 255. I need to shrink that to say 40 regardless of data loss. Can someone suggest the best way to do this?

go into the table design and change it down, then it will ask are you sure you want to do this because it can cause data loss, say yes. done
