Hi all,

Is it possible to have a CNAME record point to a particular web page on a host i.e. alias name: something target: webserver/bin/webpage.htm. I think there is a special record for this type of redirecting but I forgot what it’s called. I am using Microsoft’s DNS service on Windows 2003 Server.

Any help is appreciated.

DNS doesn't provide any information to a client except for name -> IP or IP -> name resolutions. It also helps clients find the IP's of particular services. There's no record to my knowledge that breaks these basic laws.

What you need to look into is how to set up redirection on a web server. DNS will point you to any IP you want, but you have to be ready for the HTTP conversation once it gets there. DNS can't get involved in that chat.

Thanks for the info ShackDaddy. I guess I'll have to setup a virtual host on my Apache server then create the respective DNS records to point to an alias.

You could use the following in DNS

myserver.mydomain.net A X.X.X.1
www Cname myserver.mydomain.net

Then set up main webpage as advertising for your service of hosting web pages

then run virtual webpages as folders under main page.

user would then enter http:\\ to get there
