hi,
i have just installed redhat7.3 w/c i wanted it to join an existing LAN authenticated by an NT-PDC environment. The domain is using a DHCP service running on the DC. I have given the redhat box a static IP and excluded it at the DHCP server.

had i set a static address on the win9x PCs, i should have easily entered their IP-to-name mapping at the /etc/hosts file. But using DHCP, how will i make the win9x PCs be known to the redhat box?

Did you use samba for your linux server ?
If you used samba. You can configure wins in your linux server.
If I didn't misunderstand your question.
Good Luck

The only way to do it using DHCP, like you asked, would be to use a DHCP server that is capable of doing dynamic DNS on behalf of the Win9x clients. Win2K servers running DHCP can do this. Everytime a Win9x machine receives a different IP address, it will automatically be updated in your DNS database by the DHCP server.
