Has anybody been able to install Red Hat 9 in a virtual machine under VMWare 4.0? I have downloaded and burned countless copies of RH9 from different sources. What happens is when I do the install I check the disks to make sure they are good. Disk 1 and 3 pass the test without any problem, but Disk 2 fails everytime. I'm using VMWare because I don't have a computer available to just install RH9.

This is what I've tried -
- Downloaded RH9 at work and at home
- Burned the iso's on three different burners
- Burned the iso's at lower speeds

Any help or suggests on this?
Thanks

If the media won't pass the media check, you can expect trouble. If you aren't able to the download/burn to make something that the media checker likes, you may need to buy the .ISO's from an online vendor - who does the same thing but has a business interest to make sure they work.

Check the discs in a regular computer (a non-VMware session) and see if they pass the media test there. Have you tried installing RH in VMware, even though it failed the test? I've seen discs fail the media checks and still complete the installations okay. This is especially true in VMware. I would do the installation in text mode, VMware has problems with the GUI installs sometimes.

I've had the exact same problems... When installing, don't include the xpdf packages... see if that works for you...

And check the md5 checksum on your iso to see if it's the same thing as the one onserver. if the md5 checksum matches wat you have downloaded, VMWARE may be acting fuzzy.

Before you do the install but after you create the new virtual machine:

Double click the CD-ROM and set the CD-ROM to Legacy emulation. This is the only way that it would go past the corrupt files(?) on the install disks error.

LarryTheCucumber, thanks for the suggestion. That is what fixed my problem.

I'm having the same problems as ereid99. And the problem is not with the cd or the iso-file. The checksum is correct and cd2 passes the media-test when I boot to cd and test it, ie not using vmware. And dropping xpdf-packages from the installation doesn't help, it just stops at a different package.

You may fix this problem by doing the following steps:

1) Once the installer requests the CD 2, take out the CD 1 from the CD-ROM as you normally do it and then close the door of your CD-ROM without any CD on it.

2) Accept the dialog box with Ok. The PC will try to find the CD 2 but will not be able to find it, so it will show you an error message by telling you that was unable to find any CD. (You may do this step as many times you like :) )

3) Now put the CD 2 on the CD-ROM as you normally do it and follow the normal procedure of your installation. It should be ok, and it will not show you the lacking of any package.

This procedure is posted on the knowledge base of vmware, it seems to be a common error on some PCs. Good Luck!.
