I am working on a Compaq computer Athlon xp 2200 256mbs DDR. If I try to run recovery after recovery starts, screen flashes and monitor shuts off. If I try to intall windows XP Pro from a xp installation cd it frezzes at the point where it's about to load to windows then same thing monitor flash and monitor shuts down. If I install windows 98 everything works fine. If I attempt to upgrade to xp from 98 after the first reboot it does the same thing monitor flash and monitor shuts off....baffled in Michigan

Sounds like a memory problem.
Typically loads 98 but not XP (which is much more memory critical)
If you have the opportunity to change the memory or remove one module if there is two, reset bios to low performing defaults, try again.
