Most of the time Mail is set up to NOT backup messages.
Take a look in your mail I think maybe under the tools loging to see how your backups are setup. If they are set up to backup messages you should be able to recover that from tape. Otherwise, consider this a leason learned and an opprotunity to inform your users to not half hazardly delete messages.
