Hi,

I am trying to get the Recovery Console to:

1. Automatically log on without a password &
2. Automatically select 1 for the default windows

Basically I want the user to have these two steps eliminated so you end up at the c:\windows prompt.

I have managed to do the first step by editing a reg key, but I don't think step 2 is possible.

I have made my own boot disk with third-party software (to access NTFS) which does everything I want, but US$125,000 is a lot pay for a commercial license for this software.

Any ideas?

I think this is about as far as you can get with the Recovery Console.

Are you sure you want users (or anyone else for that matter)to have uncontrolled access to the machine's innards?

Have you looked at BartPE as an alternative? It is free.
You might be able to make use of BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD).

Thanks for the info Linney, I have already seen those links, but BartPE seems promising.

I am after a hard drive solution as people lose CDs and scratch them all the time, so I might try Dual-booting BartPE/WinXP and see how that goes.

BartPE is a well written piece of freeware and I believe it can be loaded on to the hard drive, but it is not something I have tried to do. I just wanted to add there are messages that come from BartPE when it is loading asking the user if he wants to install Networking or not. These type of messages may be worse than the clicking of "1" to enter Recovery Console's C: Prompt.
