I have a situation here where on boot up, XP doesn't get beyond a Blue screen error. The error message that displays refers to a prvious USB mouse driver that is dodgy. The machine will not start up in safe mode, and setup won't run either! I want to avoid re-formatiing if I can. Thoughts anyone?

Setup won't run? Do you mean XP install CD?

I was going to suggest a repair reinstall - - but you need to be able to boot from XP install CD for that (can't see why it wouldn't run unless something wrong with hardware - a dodgy USB driver is irrelevant to XP set up run from CD).

If you get as far as a blue screen you are past the point where you could have selected Safe Mode.

Restart the computer and keep hitting the F8 key repeatedly. Ignore any keyboard error messages.

You should be able to see a menu to select Safe Mode.

I agree with wolluf that a dodgy USB driver is not going to prevent running Setup from the CD.

Once in Safe Mode use Device Manager to uninstall the USB device.

Many thanks Wolluf and Bcastner. The eerror message ended up leading to a dodgy memeory stick, which was replaced and sorted.
thanks again
Michael
