Have a laptop with XP Home, not sure what version. Basically got an "ntoskrnl.exe error is corrupt or missing" error and the OS will not load. Replaced the ntoskrnl.exe file and the boot.ini file and no dice, OS will not load.
So at this point my question is, what is the best route to take in recovering the files?
I do have a bootable cd that will allow me to have a stripped down OS that will let me alter files. Someone told me that with Windows 2000 it is possible to change the name of my Windows install (ie change c:\windows to c:\windows2)
and then reinsall another Win2K on the same partition as the existing OS. Once the new OS is installed all the files created with the old OS will be accesible. Is this true with XP Home? Thanks.
