recovering protected files from hard drive

I'm running winxp pro,my hard drive crashed. I was able to get the hard drive to work again as a slave to another hard drive using winxp pro. But I'm not able to access my files that was unshared or protected, I get a message saying "access denied" How can I access my protected files so that I could back them up to a cd-rom to install on my new hard drive?
