Recovering From Format and Outlook Express.

Does any one have a step by step system for recovering from a format or disk replacement so that email addresses, emails, bookmarks etc can be saved for easy recovery? A better question might be: If you have a problem and have to format your drive how should you have saved important information and how can you save mail messages, etc before hand so that they could have been recovered easily?
