Windows 2000 Server.

I have a user that deleted a file located on an NTFS partition. I tried to locate the file in the server's recycle bin and also the users local recycle bin. Cannot find it anywhere.

When you delete a file on an NTFS partition, where does it go? How do you recover it without restoring from backup?

You can't unless you use 3rd party software.

Ash.

When you delete a file across a W2K network, the technical term I use for my users is "gone-gone". It doesn't go to any recycle bin.

You'll have to recover from backup in this case, or as Ash indicates, go to a 3rd party solution.

What you are saying is that Win2K server does not have the ability to recover deleted files from an NTFS partition.

Strange?? You would think that it would go to the servers recycle bin, just like Novell's deleted.sav directory, so you can recover with a builtin utility as in Novell's salvage.

What software do you recommend?

Correct

Microsoft haver never really pushed undelete systems in their OSs. They want servers to use raid-5 with daily backups. Novells salvage is useful but undelete software shouldn't only be the last restort.

>What software do you recommend?

Never used it but this looks powerful.
