recover info from a relabeled tape

Yes, it is. However, you must "prepare" the media in a certain way:
The problem is that the label overwrites the tape and places the "Logical End Of Tape, LEOT" (2 consecutive "File Marks') right after that (at the beinning). Current tape drive's firmware do not allow to read further although the data still can be recovered. So you must delete the second FMK. There are various methods to do this.
1. Use a professional data recovery company. They will charge you a lot of money just to overcome this problem.
2. In a standalone device, initiate a new write process, then turn off power. This sounds very rude, but it is the simpliest way to do this.
Then you must rescan the tape. NW will synchronize with the beginning of the next start of a save set and will be able to scan the residual data. The result is that one or more save sets at the beginning will be lost but you will be able to recover the rest.
Two issues:
- It will not work if a save set has been continued from another volume.
- If you want to go the rough way, you better try that on unimportant media first.
