Recover filer from earlier backup?

I performed a directed recovery of a large number of files from a backup of SERVER1 (a NetWare server) to an identical volume name on SERVER2 (another NetWare server). However, there were some files missing that were evidently skipped on the most recent backup, so I need to restore them from an earlier backup.

How do I do this? The recovery screen (F3, "Directed Recover") on the NetWare client lists only the most recent backup. In that same screen, I tried navigating down to the parent folder, then hitting "V" for the versions screen. I could see several previous backups, but I could not drill down into a previous backup to mark a file for recovery. Hitting <Enter> at a directory level just exited the versions screen and went back to the recovery screen, and I still had only the most recent backup listed. If I navigated down to a file that exists within the most recent backup, then hit "V", I could mark an older version for recovery. However, I need to recover an older version of files that do not exist in the most recent backup.

What do I need to do within a NetWare client to perform a directed restore from an earlier backup?

Thank you for your help.

Change the browse time to an earlier date is probably the easiest method. This of course requires that the file index for these save sets is still available.

From the NW/NetWare Admin Guide:

To change the browse time, follow these steps:
1. Select Change Browse Time from the Recovery window’s File menu to
open the Change Browse Time dialog box.
2. Enter the time for the indexes you want to browse in the Change To
attribute and press [Enter].
You can use the MS-DOS time format and other string types as time formats to change the browse time. For example:

MM-DD-YY HH:MM [a,p] (ex. 07-22-97 13:40p)
6 months ago
2 months ago

Thank you very much for your help. I followed your instructions and was able to browse earlier backups.

Unfortunately, however, the files I needed were not on any of the backups I was able to browse. However, I have more backups available, but they do not show up as being available to browse. I suppose that the browse time has expired, though I thought I had set it to six months. How can I browse these earlier backups? Do I need to use the scanner program? If so, what parameters do I need to use, and will it damage the entries I currently hava available for browsing? My NetWorker server is running on Windows 2000. Would whatever I need to do be easier on the Windows server, or does it have to be run from the NetWare client?

Thank you again for your help; it is really appreciated.

The only command that helps in fact is scanner:

scanner -i -S ssid device_name

This will not affect existing entries in the file index but only add the file index info for this save set.

scanner is a local command - it must run on a server or a storage node.

Scanner to recover file index of tape out of browse period.

I have a tape which is out of my browse period.

I want to restore the file index in order to do a specific directory recovery.

So I have done the following;

Done a mminfo to determine the tapes required from the recovery date requested.

Pulled the tapes back onsite and now I want to run scanner on them to pull back the file index.

I have run the following;

scanner -i /dev/rmt/4ubn

This scans the tape correctly and should theoretically recreate the index files.

Now theoretically, that should be it ? I checked the volumes, and the save sets on the tape are marked recoverable, but not browsable.

So, am I missing a step ?

The alternative appears to be something like this;

# nsrck -L7 -t "11/23/03" client
nsrck: checking index for 'client'
nsrck: The file index for client 'client' will be recovered.
nsrck: Recovering index savesets of 'client' from 'server'

Note this causes a tape request by the server for the index files for the client for this date. Now I can do this, but
I would like to complete the process the first way.

Thanks for any assistance.

Sure you can run "scanner -i". If you know the save set you want to recover from (it is still in the media index until you relabel the tape!) then you can just scan this one with "scanner -i -S ssid).

BTW, the save sets (or the whole media) could even be recyclable - scanner would still work (even on unknown media which you got from somewhere else).
