For legal purposes I have to recover a user mailbox without him knowing this.
He is still active inside the company, and I have to see the situation at a certain point-of time in the past, putting the recovery in another mailbox or .pst file.
Reading the documentation, it seems it is not possible.
Any hints on how to perform this action?
With exmerge utility I can do it for the mailbox as it is at this moment, but not for situation in the past...

Thanks in advance for any tips.

HI Gianluca,

which Exchange version do you use? With Exchange 2003 you could recover the information store into the recovery storage group and mount this version. After this you could use xmerge (or tools like "Power Controls" from Ontrack).

Oliver

I'm using exchange 2003 sp1 on w2k3 sp1.
legato is 7.3 with exchange module 4.1.
At this moment I'm doing only mailboxes backup, specifying in legato directives for all the distinct mailboxes (less than 50).
So I have not the legato backup taken on information store at 2nd of August...
Or are you saying that exchange itself mantains a sort of history of the information store?

The recovery storage group works with the IS backup only. I dont know if there's any kind of "redirected restore" to another mailbox. I backup the stores only because the single mailbox backup take too much time (400+ mailboxes).
After the restore of an IS (without mounting, you dont need the logfiles) you can open the EDB with Power Controls and export everything to a target mailbox or a PST. You can export the whole mailbox or a single object (an email, an attachment or a calendar item). As far as I know this is not possible with the Legato Exchange client. A great tool - it makes many things easier ;). The number of licences you need for Power Controls depends on how many mailboxes you have in the IS you want to recover from, not the number of mailboxes on the server. So dont be afraid if you check the price ;)
