Recommendations Please . . .

My company would like me to be able to block/allow only certain sites for certain people. Does anybody have a recommendation for an inexpensive software solution that they have used in the past?

You can do this in very basic form using IE Content Advisor, although it is a little rough and doesn't travel from machine to machine.

It would seem what you really want is a proxy server.

There are many ways, both inexpensive and cheap.

1. Use a router or firewall.

2. As stated above, a proxy server.

3. Company policy/login banners.

4. A notice to all employees that all internet usage is now being audited. (Even if it is not, that will make someone think twice about surfing)

There are some free firewall software out there. I am not sure how good they are. You need to make sure that it is free for businesses as well.

A 2600 series CISCO router is around 5000 or so and you can put on their Firewall IOS for another 1500 or so.

There are many ways to achieve your goal...

A good step in determining the level of protection you need is by doing a risk assessment.

What do you have for a router now? Most of the ~$100 variety now have built in content filters and site filters, so you might double check that. Otherwise, in a large domain, you will be better served with a larger firewall like Blue mentioned. Other products to look for are Sonicwall and 3Com.
