Hello,

I'm pretty new to VPN so could anyone recommend a
high-performance Software VPN solution? Data compression
and security are in a minor role for me right now. Low
latency is also a key issue. I'm connecting two computers,
both connected to the Internet via ADSL.

Thanks alot in advance!

VPN will not affect the latency (but they can compress to improve bandwidth), you are limited to the ADSL connection.

Running a VPN client does consume machine resources though. If you want to stream terabytes you will need SERIOUSLY powerful VPN appliances to perform the packetting, along with mulitple direct fibre (10xT5 should do it.)

In most cases (since you mentioned ADSL) you can use simple VPN routers (no client software at all) to VPN between sites. They are able to VPN at slightly >1Mb/sec throughput, which is more than most connections can handle.

IF you ARE streaming terabytes, look at multiple Symantec SGS 5310 (clusters.) These are designed for multiple simutaneous tunnels and last time I installed one it will easily throughput more than 100Mb/sec in a single tunnel...five in each cluster should do it :)

Thanks a lot for your reply, AlexIT. That cleared out things
a bit for me. :)

So the data compression and encryption doesn't hinder latency, even in latency-sensitive multiplayer games?

Lets say you have a resource-intensive VPN client (any of them with advanced encryption will require some horsepower.) This will reduce throughput to the ADSL because all traffic must first be encrypted and encapsulated. However, unless you are running a 512bit AES with Dif/Hel scheme on your Pentium200 you are probably going to have more than 1Mb throughput. On this machine, just the AES encryprtion will also crush your processor. This is why we always recommend LAN's use HARDWARE-based VPN, then you have a $129-$12900 box dedicated to the encryption and your LAN can run full speed. For a single client, just up the hardware requirements to cover the VPN overhead.

Ok, based on that I think I've got enough HP for my VPN needs then.

Thanks a lot again for very informative reply :).
