Just recently have changed roles of a PDC and BDC.

the BDC is now the PDC and it seems a few workstations now unable to logon onto the domain. Have stopped the Netlogon service onthe BDC as I want the PDC to service all logons but the workstations trys to conenct ot the old PDC which is a DBC now with Netlogon service stopped

How do I force the workstation to go to the PDC for logon to Domain. It is running Xp

You could try adding the following to your lmhosts file (not lmhosts.sam, just lmhosts with no extension). The file is located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc (if it doesnt exist, create it).

ip_address_of_pdc [tab] servername [tab] #PRE [tab] #DOM:domain_name

e.g

192.168.100.1 SERVER1 #PRE #DOM:DOMAIN1

Thought of that but I have no problems browsing the net but am unable to add the workstation to the Domain.
I will add the above lines into a host file but I cant even add the machine to the domain.
I have even added the workstation from the DOMAIN (on server manager), changed workstation name to no avail.

Netlogon needs to be running on your BDC, or it will get out of sync with your PDC. Turn it on and synchronize it with the PDC in Server Manager. Ideally the two servers should be allowed to load balance authentication. How many clients do you have? Usually authentication is not a big utilizer of resources. Use the lmhosts file per the previous post if you must specify.

Only problem I have is, it seems as though what WAS the PDC has some corruption as all the shortcuts to tools such as Services, Admin tools have lost there associations and are viewed as "lnk" files. Using Net command can view Netlogin running so thats no a problem.
This is the reason why I promoted the BDC to a PDC. very strange things happened....so I am unable to go to look at what services are started from the normal Start, Settings, Services etc.....
