i have just taken over as Admin and we want to rebuild our exchange server. What is the best way to rebuild the server and not lose any of the mail or public folders? We would want to copy off server and then rebuild server. Then move mailboxes back.

Hold on! This could Hurt! I ain't certified by Microsoft!

Thanks

Ok, this is not the 'nice' way, but quick and dirty if you are in a hurry.

Export everything to PST files, keeping the users OFF the server at that time of course.
For Public folders, note the rights, and copy them to a users account, and again export to PST.

rebuild and restore the PST's.

Note: do not do this if you are talking several hundreds of users though!

ok...so u wanna rebuild exchange? not the server? whats the problem with exchange that you want to rebuild it??

Thanks, PAUL

We are getting "waiting for exchange server to respond". We think when the last admin upgraded from 5.5 to 2000, he did something wrong. We have done everything to increase performance without any good results.

Yes indeed. i have seen this problem. Do u happend to have ISA server? in RRAS chk to see if there are input filters...also make sure that sp3 is intalled and the latest roll up pack. Defrag your pub1 and priv1 when you can have down time. I had the same problem and i did the above to get rid of the problem

Thanks, PAUL

I did this same scenario when I took over a new position in August. What worked for us was to add a second exchange server temporarily on old hardware. Then move the mailboxes and public folders to the temp mail server. Then uninstall exchange on the production server, remove it from the domain. Then clean install the server, install exchange, move the mailboxes back over and public folders, and then uninstall exchange on the temp mail server.
This method gives you almost zero down time and worked well for us.
thanks,
Ben
