Reboots after the first splash screen

I had a system that died somewhere in the process of updating to SP4, (from a network share,) the result was a reboot after the first splash screen.

I booted off the original Windows 2000 Professional CD, selected "R" to repair, "R" to repair without the ERD, and then let it do the automatic recovery.

All came back, and are performing the upgrade from a local copy of SP4.
