Hi, this is what I have!

1 W2K AD with DNS (first AD server...used for backups)
1 W2K AD with DNS (fileserver)
1 W2K with E2K

I have all computers on the network pointing to the fileserver for DNS(primary)....Secondary (backup's server)

I have all server's pointing to the fileserver for primary..and backup server for secondary...Except the backup server is pointing to itself for primary and to the fileserver for secondary....is this right?

Ok, here my question second question...Should I be able to reboot the backup server without affecting servers and users????

I thought I would be able to..but during the boot process I couldn't access the exchange server

Thanks for any help!
Steve

Set your two file servers to be GC's as well, and you should be able to reboot either of them without affecting users.

Thanks lander215....I thought I had both servers setup as globals....done!...going to test her tonight!

I had a Microsoft document that said somewhere if you are going to be taking down the "PDC" domain controller for maintenance or extended periods to make sure to transfer the 5 roles to the other domain controller.

Speedracerjr...that was my second thought, if the test doesn't work tonight, I know why..the famous 5 roles!

Just out of curiosity what are you rebooting it for? If its just running backups only you should be fine to just let it run unless you have to load a critical patch or something.

I got a few hotfixes for BE9...thought I could reboot it on the fly during the day, instead of waiting till night time!

You probably can and will be alright, but that one time you think it will be OK is when Microshaft rears its ugly head!!!

I can usually sneak in a quick reboot of a server early in the morning without affecting anyone. Occasionally I'll bump somebodies mail or something, but it corrects itself usually before anyone notices.

But, before I spread my GC's around to a couple of others servers, I could only reboot on the weekend, like Sunday morning at 1:36am. ;-)
