Hopefully someone here can be of more help than Shuttle's tech suport...

Built the following system:

Shuttle ST20G5 barebones system
AMD 64 3400+
1 gig patriot memory (2x512)
Sony DVD burner
40 Gig hd
everything else is onboard (ie video sound etc)

First boot works great install Win XP Pro goes through the reboots etc.

Shut system down.

Turn on get nothing just lights and fans going full speed.

reset CMOS

next boot works great. Run VERY quiet and quite fast.

shutdown.

next boot... NOTHING lights fans full speed.

reset CMOS runs great... lather rinse repeat.

I have run the latest bios update from Shuttle with no change. Have tried leaving bios settings as is and tried backing the speed/timing setting down. No difference.

As the thing has no onboard speaker that I have found or heard there is no known Bios beep code to give. The only answer I get from Shuttle is that the memory is not on their "approved list" (most of which I found are not even available anymore).

Need help fast as my retun period on it is running down fast.

Thank you all

You may want to upgrade your power supply. Barebone systems more than often come with minimal hardware (low-end) products. That is whay they are so inexpensive. Upgrading the power supply has worked for me in system I have built.

I have seen memory cause the symptoms you are listing, albeit usually consistantly, not intermittant. Have you tried re-seating it or swapping slots?

Have you looked to see if any bios settings are getting changed? Is the cmos battery good?

The way you are having to reset the cmos each time could well indicate that the bios settings are changing.
As BadFrog said, have you got 3.3volts from the Lithium button battery (change if less than 3volts) I know it's new but it would be the first time I've seen an almost flat battery on a new system.

As a general rule generic PSU's are bad news but these Shuttle power supplies are good quality for their physical size and rated capacity.
This 240watt unit? should be adequate given that video is built in and besides the smaller dimensions limit the availability of more powerful options.

The memory has been switched out once before with no change in the boot issues. However, I think one of the two dimms is now bad as I can no longer boot period. Can anybody think of how a motherboard could damage a dimm?

Thanks so far. May have to turn this over to a local shop as I haven't much time to work on it myself. :(
