Ok, I have a CD-RW drive installed in my PC. I was told that if I took that driver out, and I put back my old CD-ROM/DVD drive back in, it would still read CD's. So I tried that, but now, it wont read CD's on any driver. And my computer says that there is no CD-ROM attached to my computer. My question is, what the heck do I do??

Thanks in advance.

Start, settings, control panel, system, device mangler, remove any devices that have anything to do with cd-rom and exit back to desktop. Goto control panel, remove programs for the R/W.
Shut down the system and take the R/W out and bring the system up. Shut the system back down and put the DVD in. Power up. Should install the right drivers.
Post back if it doesn't. And it very well may not help. You will shortly understand why the operating system is know as "plug & pray" compatible. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Also check IDE cd roms jumper settings are set for Master or Slave depending on if CD rom is second drive on cable (slave) with HD as master .set bios to auto for hard drive setting . If bios doesn't detect cd rom then it won't work .

One simple thing to do is if you made or have the boot disc with CD assist on it boot the computer from it and choose cd assist when it comes up. If not borrow one from a friend. In a few cases it might not work ( borrowed) but in most cases it will. See if you can go the CD then. If it is present then you have a driver problem. If not check the other things you see presented to you plus make sure flat cable is plugged in correctly 1 to 1

Also, go into safe mode and see if the CDROM drive exists and with duplicate drivers. That will cause Windows to flip out. If you do see duplicate drivers, delete all the drivers in the CDROM listing. When you reboot windows, it will install the right driver.

BTW: has files to create boot disks with generic CDROM drivers.
