REAL BASIC: What is a memory stick???

Someone in my office will be making a slide presentation at a conference. Conference specs say that speakers can bring their presentations on USB Memory Stick. She asked me, "Can we use memory sticks?"

I've never heard of memory sticks before. But obviously people in this forum have.

What stands between me (standard office, many PCs running some version of Windows, no fancy equipment) and getting her presentation onto a memory stick??

carr seems to be describing a Sony type memory card. It is not a USB device although there are memory card readers which are USB devices.

The organizers might be refering to a memory 'card' which has a USB connector as part of its housing. An example of this is at

You should probably clarify with your conference organizers what it is that they mean. Their terms are confusing.

Yep! The Sony version (non USB) is called a memory stick and needs a reading device which can be a USB device. The other one is also referd to as a pen drive and plugs into the USB port.

with the memorystick format.
(Can be used by PC's USB port only via adapter)
(MSAC-US7 , MSAC-US2 , MSAC-US1A )


For PC's USB there are several "key ring" usb pens
often used for plugin to usb port for transfering
presentations etc .
Like the TwinMos USB Mobile Disk II - Flash - 128 MB
and other brands.
