Readonly problem when trying to open Ms Excel File

I'am trying to open some excel files but they all return the error that file can be opened as it may be readonly
File cannot be accessed

Are the files on a server? If so, you may not have rights to them. You will also get this message if the file is corrupted. In that case you will need to restore from backup, or if you use Novell as a file server, try to salvage.

The Files are not on a server but on a machine connected to a peer to peer network. secondly the problem seem to have affected a large no of files
