can anyone explain to me how to read the replication monitor data?

for example....here's a typical entry:

merged: 136239 data changes (23008 inserts, 0 updates 113231 deletes 0 resolve

the table i'm replicating has a total of 28907 rows so....what's with the 136239 data changes? is that individual cell items within the table?
it's confusing to me because right after a snapshot is taken i get this:

merged: 28907 data changes (28907 inserts, 0 updates 0 deletes 0 resolve

which is exactly the number of rows in the table.
