Read spreadsheet without showing the spreadsheet

Is it possible to open a spreadsheet in VisualBasic and get data from its worksheets without actually seeing the workbook open?

I ask this because I have some code that opens a lot of spreadsheets and gets data. However, it is ugly to watch because you see all those sheets opening and moving around.
