Read Only CD-RW

I have formatted a cd-rw in order to copy files to from another cd-rw. When I go to switch files I get the message "Disc is read only". This has never happened before. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thisa is driving me crazy

Is the Recording Tab setting correct on the Properties of the Drive you are trying to write to?

This a quote from a Microsoft source.


1. Run Regedit to open the Registry Editor
2. Switch to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

– All CD drives show up in same key

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

3. Note: if you have more than 1 CD-ROM / CD-RW devices installed, you will see the related items under the Drivers. Please change the keys one by one, so you can find the correct key.

After doing the above steps, try to burn the CDs in Windows XP.

Do you mean you want to use the CD-RW disk like a giant floppy disk? If so then you need to be using packet-writing software that supports UDF. (See

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format)

Depending on what CD burning software you are using then this packet-writing support may not be installed by default. For example, Nero's packet writing support is called InCD and is an optional install. Roxio'a version is called DirectCD.

Note that unlike Vista, Windows XP has only read-support for UDF, not write-support. This is why you need third-party packet-writing software.

If you are using packet-writing software then it's possible that it's not starting up properly, hence your problem of not being able to just overwrite files. In this case a re-install of the software should fix it.

I'm using Creator 7. But I have Nero but am not using it. I guess I should take Nero off

I also use Roxio 7 and when I eject the disk with the "Drag-to-Disk" and the "eject settings" window appears, I have to go to the advanced settings and check the last line to "Leave the Disk As Is". Good Luck and please let us know your solution.

I must admit I haven't used Roxio for years.

When you try to edit and save a file directly off the disc, it shows as "read only"
