re MS Office's lovely grayed/ungrayed menu items

Does anyone know a way to manually manage these? I'm referring to the graying of certain menu items in Office products. It's ostenisbly MRU based, but behaves more like MS-PrimaDonnaDeveloper-mushroom-induced-capriciously based.

For ANY MS product, do you know how to gray out a "useless" menu item, even if I am to blame for ungraying it by clicking on it? _{-- People: learn to spell, or signify ESL, for cryin' out loud. Lame! Ever notice how computers seem to be touchy about ACCURACY?!}
