Re-installing Windows ME Question 1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you re-install Windows (ME in this case)
right on top of an existing install? Yes, I know it's better to delete all
disk partitions, recreate the partitions and then format those, but the idea
here is to keep the data on the PC (like documents, music, photos, etc). I
thought one time in the past I had installed Windows 98 right on top of an
existing install of 98. I want to do this to correct strange problems that
can't seem to be fixed. I'm hoping the re-install would fix everything.

Can I do it? (install on top of existing Win ME install without wiping out
other data and non-Microsoft installed software)

Thanks. I think I'll try deleting the windows director after moving out the profiles and so on. That makes sense. I just hope all the other installed software works ok after that.
