I know, why would I?. Well, I have 2 machines side by each. 1 has 98 the other 98SE. The 1 with 2nd had the install program on the c drive (no cd). I tried to connect the 2 machines, via direct connect to move the Win98se file over to the other machine prior to reformatting, without success. I guess I got frustrated and decided to scrub 98 SE and install 98 from the cd I did have.
So far so good. I went in on A drive with start-up disk and reformatted C. Then I Fdisked and made the entire disk the primary dos partition. Next I dropped my win 98 cd into the drive and rebooted but all of a sudden the d,e drives come back as Invalid drives. I checked into Bios and set the cd to primary. No good came of that.
These are old machines 133 and 200 MGz but thats all I have and I need them both!!!!! Can anyone tell me what's up?

Thanks Hank

Time to take the logicals and extended partition away and recreate them.
Somewhere in there you have a media byte that the 98 can't interpret.

Thanks Ed,

And thanks for always being here.

I fdisked and reformatted but can'y get it to boot from CD. I set CDROM as primary boot drive in Bios but it keeps asking for a bootable disk. I've tried 2 differant 98 cd's (for new PS's) with the same result.

This machine is old. Pentium Pro, 200 MHz. A while ago I lost my zip drive for no good reason. Maybe it's just run its race and I should let it go. The problem is the comp show has stopped coming to Portland, ME and thats always been my source for hardware I can afford.

Create a boot floppy on the other machine or get one at , boot with it and move to the CD and run setup.

The PP200 would be a step up from probably 70% of my stuff. Shouldn't be a problem with 98. Zip is another story. They die. Some a more horrible death than others.

Thanks Ed,

Boy what a differance! I went on line and got new boot & Fdick downloads and everything clicked. 98 went right in.

Now I have new bugs to contend with. 1st I tried to set-up my web browser so I could download all of the MS updates. They'll probably fill my 1.2 gig hd. But no matter, as the machine no longer sees the modem. I have an internal Motorola 62802-52 on my 200 MHz Intel AP440CT1 mother. On bootup it detects an "unknown comunication device" but can't see anything on com 1 or 2. I don't think it's the trouble but I did pickup the newest driver. When I tried to open that download I got "can' import" file error message. Also having trouble with Crystal Audio drivers but that's back burner for now.

One point of intrest is that the drivers and everything I found on line said this mother board was for win95. As I have been running 98SE for a couple years I didn't pay that much attention, until now.

Well as always any thoughts you might be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, hope you are having the oppertunity to enjoy this Labor Day. Here in Maine it's been great!

Thanks again, Hank

Would pull the modem temporarily and see if there is a port conflict. If you have 2 serials enabled you will need to get the modem elsewhere or make room for it. Not familiar with the modem but there were lots that would partially identify but not install so I would normally cancel out of the bootup stuff and do the install manually.

I've generally found that boards designed around the time of 95 handle 98 and SE without problems. Has more to do with the hardware identification for plug&pray issues than anything else.
