I'm on XP Home and have recently begun to have a wierd problem. I'll be dialed into my ISP and sometimes if I let my connection timeout, when I redial it goes through the connection gyrations and then says it can't connect.

I'll pay more attention next time but I believe the error is something like

TCP/IP CP Error Code 31

None of the "help button" help does any good. When I reboot everything works.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks!

error code 31 is "A Device attached to the system is not functioning"
A net helpmsg 31 delivers that error explanation.

Code 31

This device is not working properly because <device> is not working properly. (Code 31)

To view the properties for <device> and see why it is not working, click Properties."

where <device> is the dependent device that must be fixed in order for this device to work properly.

Solution button: Properties

This code appears when a device is dependent on another device to be functioning correctly. This does not include devices that are enumerated by the parent device.

The Properties button displays the properties for the other device. More than likely, the other device will also have one of these Device Manager error codes. Follow all the recommended solutions. If the devices still do not work, remove them from Device Manager and use the Add New Hardware wizard to redetect them. Finally, consult with the hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

Ok, I've had the problem again. My version of the message closely matches what you have listed, however, there is no mention as to which device it is nor any buttons to lead me towards any property pages. (Boy I'd love it if there were!)

I went into the event viewer and the event that I get for this (in the System events) is as follows:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ipnathlp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 31012
Date: 9/4/2002
Time: 12:39:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HP
Description:
The DNS proxy agent encountered an error while obtaining the local list of name-resolution servers. Some DNS or WINS servers may be inaccessible to clients on the local network. The data is the error code.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at Data:
0000: e8 00 00 00 è...

I've done searches on "ipnathlp" and "DNS Proxy agent", etc. but to no avail. The Event ID does me no good and I'm not sure what to search with the error code of 0xe8!? Clicking the above microsoft link just tells me there is no more info on this error.

I'm more than happy to keep digging but I've run out of places to dig and things to dig for. If anyone could give me some hints, I'm happy to get the shovel back out!

Thanks!
